Discover Creative Commons: A Beginner’s Guide
Discover CC Licensing was developed as a final project for the Creative Commons Certificate for Educators. The workshop is a beginner’s guide to CC. It is an openly licensed and free self-paced course. The modules provide content about the CC licenses, layers of licenses, CC licensing and Open Educational Resources (OER), as well as examples to enhance an understanding of CC. The training serves as an example of how to reuse and remix CC licensed content to introduce CC to beginners. The course can serve as a resource on OER repositories and other platforms.

To the Rescue of Orphan Works on the Internet: An Approach from Latin America
The presentation will discuss our research on orphan works in Latin America. A comparative analysis will seek to account for existing regulatory and institutional differences in the region, in order to favor the exploitation of orphan works in the context of the digitalization of heritage. Additionally, it will seek to know the discourse of creators, civil servants and officials of the heritage sector in the region. We hope that the discussion favors the articulation of networks around the regional discussion of access to orphan works in Latin America

Code, Words and Ideas: Contrasting Free Software, the Wikipedia and CC
How does the world of code (Free Software and Open Source) compare with that of Wikipedia, and the Creative Commons? Three different but parellel -- in a way -- movements that have sought to change the way our world relates to creating and sharing knowledge and information. This paper, by an Indian journalist who has written on, and closely followed through participant observation, from the late 1990s and early 2000s, tries to pick up some useful lessons or suggest where positive change could come from.

Does Creative Commons Licensed Content Pay, Especially Indigenous Language Content?
Majority of the world’s languages are spoken and not written. However, only 7% of the world’s knowledge is captured in publication. (WhoseKnowledge? 2019) Languages with limited resources face the risk of low content creation and low readership. Most such languages do not experience a content demand surge nor a faster growth of content producers. We will be demonstrating how and which socio-economic, policy-level and technical factors affect indigenous-language content, especially the Ho and Santali languages of India from research supported by Grant for the Web and Creative Commons CAF fund.

Chem-Mystery: Unheard Stories of Scientists
Often Science is learnt through its formulae, equations, numerical, reactions, diagrams and more. Stories of discoveries and inventions are included but in a secluded box somewhere in the text, usually for the purpose of motivation. These are presented in isolation eliminating the role of politics, societal upheavals of the time along with the personal stories of hope, despair, perseverance and more. This makes science seem disconnected from the real world and without a human face. This series of podcasts bring in stories of science giving it a more human identity in the realm of things.

Project LaunchPad
Launchpad is an interactive game concept, funded by Grant for the Web that aims to playfully educate and enable internet users to successfully monetize their creations on the web. It will allow players to assume the role of a creator/maker, construct a scenario for releasing their content and pave their way into a successful monetization of their creations. This concept would popularize the lesser know and more equitable methods of monetization that use Interledger protocol and web monetization standards. Game will be released under CC BY-SA 4.0 to ensure higher reachability and open access.

Imagining Utopias
Through this workshop we open up a wider discussion on how open access can catalyze creative and critical readings of GLAM collections, particularly in the Indian context, making room for under-represented narratives. Using images from DAG’s collection of modern Indian art that have been released into the Creative Commons (in 2020, DAG’s museum initiative became the first in India to do so), this workshop & discussion led jointly with Amra Odbhut, a queer collective based in Kolkata, encourages participants to re-imagine established gender binaries through collage & zine -making.

Wikisource is the largest collaborative digital library and one of the sister projects of Wikipedia and is primarily used to transcribe public domain texts as well as relicensed works. In past years, we have seen Wikisource growing into the core infrastructure for some of the marginalized language communities and I hope to share some of these interesting stories and I also hope to collaborate with the larger Open Source community to improve the platform so that perhaps, even cooler things like transcribing audio-visual culture can be done on Wikisource.

You’re Allowed to Remix it, but can You? Exploring Portability: The Measure of how far OER can Travel
“Remixing,” as one of the “5R’s,” is one of the key advantages of Open Educational Resources (OER). But can most of the OER being produced today actually be remixed?

In this session, open advocates Learning Equality will lead an investigation into portability: the quality that determines whether digital content is able to reach as many audiences around the world as possible.

We’ll invite participants to evaluate their own or others’ resources with regards to a portability checklist, create indicators collaboratively, and explore ramifications for evaluators, creators, and technologists.
