Using Transkribus - Background and Demo
This workshop enables participants to use the Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) tool Transkribus, a way of rendering historical manuscript material into machine-readable printed text. It showcases how to upload document images to the platform, run automated features like line segmentation and layout/document analysis, as well as how to train an AI-enabled model to automatically transcribe text. Once a trustworthy rendition of the text is transcribed as machine-readable text, institutions and scholars can begin to make the past readable and accessible through audio software and other digital methods.

Glitch Vacations
Glitch Vacations is an audiovisual performance by Flor de Fuego and Naoto Hieda - a journey through open webpages and platforms created by the artists and the community members. The generative video and sound consist of minimal elements - geometric shapes and sinusoidal waves - yet the modulation and collision of each element result in complex forms, namely a glitch. In the livestream, the artists perform as navigating through web pages, which are interlinked with each other; optionally, audience members can open a provided URL to participate in an interactive experience on their browser.

Wikibase: An Open Source and Free Tool to Power the Commons
Wikibase is a free, open source software developed and maintained by Wikimedia Deutschland. Originally developed to run the free knowledge base Wikidata, Wikibase is now being developed as a software product in its own right. Why? Because it is a free, flexible and collaborative software solution that allows users to set up and maintain their own linked database. Wikibase is increasingly being used by GLAM, government and research institutions to store and manage data. This talk will contain an introduction to Wikibase, showcases, how to get started, and our plans for the future.

Copyright piracy, hacking vaccine science, and, if you're Cuba, offering your vaccines to the world in exchange for food: this is a sample of what lies just outside the movement for openness. What does Creative Commons gain from allying with forces that achieve the same goals, but don't use the same means?

Music Showcase - Olivia Kuper Harris
Los Angeles based singer, songwriter, and producer, Olivia Kuper Harris, grew up in a musical family in Dallas, Texas. As a traveling family, often living out of their VW van for months at a time, Harris passed the hours plugged into her CD player, writing music and escaping into the worlds of pop, R&B, and soul.

Her independent album, Juicy, hit #12 on the Top 100 R&B/Soul ITunes Charts this past year.  Her Pop/R&B EP, Luvtrovert, dropped in July of 2021, and has quickly become a chill R&B playlist favorite.

Harris also has a passion for jazz and has performed 7 national and international tours with Jazz band, Postmodern Jukebox, since winning their international talent search competition in 2017.

Harris’s voice has recently been featured over the opening credits of the MTV documentary, “Each And Every Day”,  and in “The Playroom” film, which landed her a write-up of The New York Times, “Ms. Harris is quite a singer. Over the closing credits she delivers the eeriest, loveliest version of “Up on the Roof” you’re ever likely to hear.”

With a growing fan base, Olivia continues to perform her original music around Los Angeles and everywhere she goes.

How Can Open Sharing and Privacy Coexist?
Every act of online sharing potentially implicates privacy concerns. Some believe this is an inevitability—that forgoing personal privacy is necessary when sharing content online. But CC still imagines a world where sharing and privacy can coexist and believes that this coexistence is paramount to sustaining free and democratic societies. How do we get there? Is a new legal tool a viable approach? This session will explore this and other questions facing the open movement when it comes to fundamental rights to privacy.

Legal and Ethical Challenges to Sharing and Using GLAM Collections
Developments in artificial intelligence (AI) present exciting opportunities for GLAMs. While these opportunities are likely to propel GLAMs forward through their digital transformation, they also raise questions in the area of copyright, ethics, privacy and data protection that need to be clarified.
To analyze these issues, an interdisciplinary panel of legal and digital humanities experts, designers and computer scientists will discuss to what extent AI can be used in the GLAM sector to generate benefits in the public interest and how sustainable, ethical and prosocial uses can be developed.

Adbusting Big Tobacco: Culture-Jamming, Plain Packaging, and Social Marketing
This paper explores the debate over intellectual property and tobacco control - focusing on various efforts to neutralise the powerful advertising campaigns of Big Tobacco. There has been a tradition of culture-jamming against Big Tobacco's advertising - with Australia's B.U.G.A.U.P. graffitists, Canada's Adbusters, and John Oliver's segment on 'Tobacco', featuring Jeff the Diseased Lung.  Under the leadership of Health Minister and Attorney-General Nicola Roxon, Australia passed legislation, mandating standardized packaging of tobacco products. The introduction of plain packaging of tobacco products has been defended by Australia in the High Court of Australia, an ISDS hearing, and the World Trade Organization (WTO). The measure has since been adopted by a dozen other nations in an effort to combat the global tobacco epidemic. A number of pioneering public health-minded countries - such as New Zealand and Finland - have gone further and have been formulating policies and strategies to achieve a tobacco endgame. In this context, this paper contends that the Creative Commons movement could play a socially useful and productive role in social marketing and behavioral economics - through promoting public health policies and initiatives, and counteracting tobacco advertising and social media. In other words, the Creative Commons could help foster a Public Health Commons.

Open Schooling and Homeschooling are established systems that were massively adopted at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In what this research calls the alternative school, two things have increased the potential effectiveness and quality when adopted and these are digital technology and open education resources (OER). However, widespread adoption does not mean effective and qualitative use or delivery. A roadmap for adoption of the alternative school for quality is provided.

Is the ‘Rich-Club’ Effect Impoverishing Our Open Communities?
‘Rich-club’ behavior describes the phenomenon where contributors with a high number of collaborations are likely to cooperate with other well-connected individuals. This phenomenon has been prevalent in academia for decades, and recent research shows a similar trend emerging in the open knowledge community. We would like to engage in the co-discovery and unpacking of barriers and continue to support and grow an inclusive international community of open knowledge advocates, developers, and stakeholders interested in understanding and mitigating the effects of the ‘rich-club’ phenomenon.

Making Community Publishing Mainstream: A New Economic Model for Knowledge Production
We need a new economic model for knowledge production. One that is in alignment with products and data and no longer silos content due to misaligned incentives. To do so, we need open tools that put communities in control of their own publishing models. A growing number of groups are experimenting with creating their own review, curation, production, publication, and impact analysis processes. These models, which we call Community Publishing, can shift power from monolithic gatekeepers to communities of practice, creating a more equitable, effective, and sustainable knowledge-sharing ecosystem

For 233 years a large Southern Island on a planet called Earth has been terrorized by its own species: visiting aliens from the "north" of a spinning sphere.

Australia's TRIPS Waiver Wobble: Intellectual Property, Access to Essential Medicines, and the Coronavirus COVID-19
In 2020, South Africa and India proposed a TRIPS Waiver to help facilitate the manufacture and dissemination of vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics in the COVID-19 crisis. In 2021, after some deliberation, President Joe Biden said that the United States would support for a TRIPS Waiver for vaccines - given the exceptional circumstances. In response, a number of other countries - such as New Zealand - followed suit. While playing a key role in vaccine dissemination in the Asia-Pacific, Australia's position on the TRIPS Waiver remains equivocal. While recognising the need to share vaccines for the good of humanity, Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison was reluctant to commit Australia to support the TRIPS Waiver. Australia wasdependent upon Pfizer to fulfil its vaccine supply - and seemed wary of offending Pfizer, which is a strident opponent of the TRIPS Waiver. The Morrison Government was been under pressure from opposition parties, the union movement, and civil society organisations to commit to a TRIPS waiver. Finally, in September 2021, Australia's Trade Minister indicated that the Morrison Government would support the TRIPS Waiver. Nonetheless, Big Pharma remains implacably opposed to a TRIPS Waiver, and has mounted an extensive lobbying campaign against the measure. The European Union, Switzerland, Norway, the United Kingdom, Japan, and a number of other countries continue to resist the adoption of a TRIPS Waiver.

MOOC on Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities
The paradigm shift in special education from ‘segregated instruction’ to ‘mainstreaming’, integrated education’ and ‘inclusive education’ has been part of the discourse of professionals in education worldwide in the last three decades. Even though successive government schemes and programs have brought large numbers of children with disabilities into schools, there remain significant gaps. This course aims to develop capacities among the educators including heads, principals, in-service and pre-service teachers to teach children in regular classrooms developed under OER4BW, UNESCO Slovenia.

Does Creative Commons Licensed Content Pay, Especially Indigenous Language Content?
Majority of the world’s languages are spoken and not written. However, only 7% of the world’s knowledge is captured in publication. (WhoseKnowledge? 2019) Languages with limited resources face the risk of low content creation and low readership. Most such languages do not experience a content demand surge nor a faster growth of content producers. We will be demonstrating how and which socio-economic, policy-level and technical factors affect indigenous-language content, especially the Ho and Santali languages of India from research supported by Grant for the Web and Creative Commons CAF fund.

Building an International Right to Research in Copyright Policy
Most copyright legislations in the world do not meet the needs of modern research and education. Cross-border sharing, online use, and making digital copies for preservation are legally permitted only to a limited degree in various countries. Chem-Mystery: Unheard Stories of Scientists
Often Science is learnt through its formulae, equations, numerical, reactions, diagrams and more. Stories of discoveries and inventions are included but in a secluded box somewhere in the text, usually for the purpose of motivation. These are presented in isolation eliminating the role of politics, societal upheavals of the time along with the personal stories of hope, despair, perseverance and more. This makes science seem disconnected from the real world and without a human face. This series of podcasts bring in stories of science giving it a more human identity in the realm of things.

How can Open Educational Video Resources be made more Accessible for Remixing and Translation Beyond Posting on YouTube?
YouTube (YT) is one of the most popular platforms for easily sharing open educational video content, but some system features inherently limit the re-usability of CC-licensed materials. We describe a workflow to facilitate compliance with CC licenses for sharing educational videos on YT. We developed this workflow for content of the Open Life Science (OLS) mentorship program. To improve the reusability of OLS videos, we shared videos and captions in English and Arabic on Zenodo and GitHub. This facilitates collaborative translations of the captions and retains download-rights of the videos.

AI Commons: reconciling open content licensing and AI training
AI training with CC licensed material is a challenge to open licensing models and philosophy, which has been signalled in the open movement for several years. At least since 2017, when IBM used CC licensed photos, obtained from Flickr, by IBM for AI training. The "AI_Commons" project has been launched by the Open Future Foundation to investigate this case, seen as emblematic for a range of challenges that signal tension between open licensing and protection of basic rights (like privacy). During the session we will present initial results of our investigation of this case.

DSA discussion & Update
The DSA is intended to set the scene for online platforms for the upcoming decade, as the Ecommerce Directive did previously. In putting in place a framework applying to all intermediaries online (from passive infrastructure providers to online platforms and marketplaces), it runs the risk however of creating spillover effects whereby the logic applying to content and products gets mixed up by policy makers, to the detriment of online freedoms.
Whilst the proposals put forward by the European Commission are more or less acceptable, the discussions unravelling in the European Parliament and Council comprise already many red flags at an early stage of the dossier.

Attributing Public Domain Materials: From Best Practices to Standardization
Public domain material (including material made available under a PDM or CC0) can be used by anyone for any purpose without any restrictions. However, many GLAMs wish to get credit or at least a mention when items from the collections they released into the public domain are used. While attribution is not a legal requirement, best practices are emerging where attribution of the GLAM hosting the physical work is strongly encouraged. What are these best practices and how can we develop an attribution (legal and/or technical) standard for the GLAM sector?

The Paradox of Open
In March 2021 we published the Paradox of Open, an essay in which we reflect on almost 20 years of involvement in the open movement. One of our key insights is that in today’s environment, openness serves as both a challenge to concentrations of power and its enabler. We want to bring our insights to the CC summit and explore possibilities for reimagining the role of openness in a digital environment that undergone fundamental changes since the emergence of Creative Commons and other champions of open in the early 2000s.

Licensing Metadata Workshop
The License Stewardship team at Creative Commons would like to facilitate a workshop session around licensing metadata. Guiding questions include “what is metadata anyway?” (targeted towards beginners), “how can metadata serve institutional missions”, and “what do we need to get right in metadata for the discovery of open content”? This session is intended for anyone who works on digitizing open content, generally thinking about the storage and retrieval of open content, the use of (good) metadata for archiving purposes, and publishing and discovery platforms.

Mapping the World of L&E in Copyright Law
The COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated deep inequalities in access to knowledge. With the sudden physical closure of schools, universities, libraries, archives, museums, and other institutions of public access and learning, digital access has become paramount. Unfortunately, the copyright laws of the vast majority of countries are not up to the task. This panel discussion will present the work of academics and advocates who are mapping variances between copyright limitations and exceptions, including on the degree to which educational and research materials may be accessed digitally.

I Want to Break Free! The Open and the Crisis of Control over Creative Freedom
The mechanisms of control of free expression are wrapped up with the mechanisms for monetisation and rights management. At a simple level, platforms demonetise expressions they don't like. At a less visible level artists have to stay in the good graces of the industry to access audiences.

From anti-terrorist laws to breaking up entrenched industries, where is openness relevant? Is it always at odds with exclusive rights and centralised control? Or maybe both make sense for different things and each has a place in the creative world?

Better Internet Workshop
Join us for an interactive workshop, facilitated by Aspiration, where we’ll collaboratively investigate the concept of a Better Internet, and the values that bring us together, through the lenses below.

We’ve already had a wide combination of stakeholders join conversations, workshops, and shared documents. A small group of us met to identify some lenses with the goal of fostering a deeper shared understanding of the issues and providing structure for beginning work together on them.

These lenses may include:
  • Misinformation and Public Health
  • Privacy & Security
  • Internet Architecture & Open Standards
  • Choice, Gatekeepers & Walled Gardens
  • Access to Knowledge
  • Building Healthy Public Spaces

We encourage you to bring your voice, listening, and expertise. For those who have already taken part, some of what we’re discussing may feel familiar. For all of us, this is the moment when we sit together in the mess and find our direction, principles, and values.

The Role of Digital Repositories in Shaping Open Education Strategies in Latin America
Embracing OER as one of the most relevant assets within the Open Education movement has proved to be growing its adherence in LatAm. Although digital repositories are the channel with the largest capillarization potential for scholars and lifelong learners in the region, LatAm countries still face a great challenge when it comes to equally guaranteeing access to education. This presentation aims to showcase a case study that analyses the OA policies from 4 countries from the region and propose a sustainability model for OER digital repositories, including their copyright legislation factors.

Unleashing Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums in Tanzania for Learning
Tanzania is endowed with a worthy reading history for the world. This history, has been documented in many ways, books, charts, parchments, displays in the historical sites, and some in the national libraries, archives and museums. African liberation history starts from Tanzania due to the facts that, Tanzania was and has been one of the peaceful countries that stood strong in supporting the struggle for independence in most of the African states. Unleashing these important and potential documentations through Open GLAM technologies contribute to the world's history than ever before.

Commons on Demand: examining attribution on third party sites and devices
The way people seek out information online is rapidly changing. Screens are optional, and people receive content in bite-sized pieces tailored to their specific queries. Many of these services are enhanced by vast quantities of openly licensed materials that they pull their content from, but remain inconsistent in identifying content as freely licensed. In this session, we’ll use one example of such content reuse, Wikipedia, to discuss how reuse is done now, why reuse without attribution can harm Wikipedia and the open knowledge movement, and how we should approach such issues moving forward.

Musical Showcase- Rocky Marsiano
Rocky Marsiano is the instrumental/beats project of the Portuguese old school producer/MC/DJ D-Mars. "The Pyramid Sessions", its critically highly acclaimed debut album (Loop:Recordings) from 2005, with a strong jazz influence, opened doors for the project to start performing live. With the releases of its 2nd album (Outside the Pyramid) and 3rd album (Back To The Pyramid) D-Mars further explored jazz fusion by adding elements of soul/funk and Brazilian music (his mother was raised in Rio). The fourth album "Music For All Seasons" was entirely produced in Amsterdam, where D-Mars is now living, and is a tribute to his mother's Brazilian records.

His latest releases "Meu Kamba", "Meu Kamba Vol. Dois" & "Meu Kamba Três"  bring a fresh element to Rocky's production: music from Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné Bissau and Mozambique. Receiving a lot of international praise, "Meu Kamba" albums are a colourful journey through the great rhythms from these Luso-African countries. All "Meu Kamba" records were originally self-released on 12" vinly and afterwards released digitally by Akwaaba Music from Ghana. A follow-up 7" vinly release called "Ritinha/Djó Djó" was also very well received by the DJ community (p.e. by the likes of Osunlade).

Rocky Marsiano has performed at all the main venues and festivals in Portugal, (p.e., ALIVE, Vodafone Mexefest, Lux Frágil, Gulbenkian, Super bock Super Rock) and was selected by BBC1's DJ and music ambassador Gilles Peterson as part of his night at Casa da Música (Porto). He also DJs regularly at some of Lisbon's main clubs and has DJed at the official Womex 2015 DJ showcase summit in Budapest.

You can hear his weekly radio show "Da Raiz Ao Ritmo" on Lisbon's finest radio station Rádio Oxigénio.

The Copyright Act Review Process in Canada: Advocacy Takeaways
In 2017 a statutory review of Canada’s Copyright Act was launched. The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology received 192 written briefs and heard from 263 stakeholder witnesses in meetings. In June 2019 the committee released its report with 36 recommendations; however an election was then called and no changes to the Copyright Act were implemented. The next Copyright Act review is scheduled to begin by the end of 2022.
We have spent the past three years analyzing stakeholder participation in the review. In this session, we will provide an overview of the review process in Canada. We will share our findings about the participating stakeholder groups and the top stakeholder recommendations for changes to the Copyright Act, as well as the committee’s own recommendations. We will highlight recommendations from higher education and libraries, which emphasized user rights and flexibility, and will touch on those addressing open access and Crown copyright. We will conclude with our thoughts on what stakeholders should consider in future advocacy.
Attendees will leave with an understanding of the Canadian copyright review process, focusing on the role and impact of stakeholders, as well as ideas for future advocacy in copyright reform.

How Open Data can Drive Transparency and Transformation in Virtual Universities
The pandemic era has forced universities worldwide to pivot to online learning platforms with lessons emerging daily about the challenges that students, faculty, and administrators face. Access to open data is largely an untapped goldmine that could improve learning outcomes and reduce the higher dropout rate associated with virtual education. As a matter of fact, only 1 in 5 virtual universities have reported their annual data on the National Center for Education Statistics website. As such, there is no transparent data system that could have helped optimize virtual learning. Virtual universities can foster transparency by releasing new datasets on graduation/course completion rate, periodic financial reports, as well as expand already existing datasets like enrollment statistics and student base.

Our session will review the impact of COVID-19 on virtuial learning and what this means for the future of education. We shall also review how access to key data sets can help to optimize learning online.

This session builds upon our Honourable mention from the Stanford University Open Datathon where we emerged Top 3 under the Policy and Advocacy Track of the Data Hackathon. We believe this session is an unexplored area of intellectual inquiry and we look forward to building this conversation with you.

My Intention Is... To Share
More and more content creators like musicians, photo-/videographers, bloggers and journalists are dependent on digital platforms to host and share their content. Most of the power to decide who can upload, under which conditions is exercised through a lengthy Terms of Service page. Online legal documentation created by legal teams to protect the digital platform, not per se to support makers.

We need your input to improve a new tool we are building, TakeNode(.org). Would you like to empower creators? Or just want to see and test what we have built so far? And why? Join us!

Update
On Sep 22 we shared TakeNode with a group of designers, activists, coders, students and social hackers. They really like the simplicity and the effort to transform something really boring (copyright law, terms of use, license agreements) into a 30-60 second effort to protect creative works before uploaded to the internet. Some questions we can maybe reuse during this session:
  • Will you offer this tool in other languages except EN/NL so it becomes more accessible to creatives around the world?
  • Can you take the open source code & structure from this tool and replace the generic licenses/intentions with CC licenses? How will this benefit the CC world?
  • Are there content sharing platforms (e.g. the ones who have to comply with new copyright laws) showing interest in copy/pasting the mechanism as part of their upload procedure?
  • Can this tool be used for public domain works / GLAM? Can we replace the "content creator" with "archivist" or any other professional  responsible for a collection of digital works?
  • You are using a clever way to offer content creators a 'verified by' status but how can you scale this to other parts of Europe, America... the world?
  • Is Google interested to use this for content uploaded to YouTube?
  • Who will own this initiative and how can you safeguard I can do a reverse lookup in 10 years' time and still find the metadata of the work, rightsholder, timestamp etc. ?
Of course, you are invited to play with the tool: https://www.takenode.org before you join this session.
Some basic examples of how content + TakeNode end up on Twitter, Flickr and YouTube can be found here: https://twitter.com/TakeNodeOrg

Spreading CC's message for GLAMs during a pandemic
Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums, and other heritage institutions have become more interested in sharing their collections online using open licenses, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the inability to access the physical space of cultural institutions. This session aims to present Creative Commons Brasil's work providing guidance for Brazilian GLAMs during 2020, in a series of meetings and even the participation during Abre-te Código (Coding da Vinci), a GLAM hackathon. It's also inspired by the research done in "Lessons we learned from cultural institutions and libraries that went open access in 2020-2021", by the Wikimedia Foundation GLAM & Culture team.

Revitalizing the Flickr Commons Program: Very Long Term Thinking about Keeping Digital Cultural Heritage Safe
For the last six months, we've been researching and planning for how to revitalise the Flickr Commons program. Invented in 2008 and launched with the Library of Congress as its first partner, the primary goal of Flickr Commons was to share hidden treasures from the world's public photography archives. Since then, the program has grown to several million photographs from 114 cultural institutions around the world, but has limped somewhat under different corporate owners -- until now. Come and hear about the research and our plans for the future of this unique cultural asset.

Collapse is Here, the Internet is Dead: What Would You Save?
Imagine the worst: big corporations win, dictators are everywhere, all news is fake, rain forests are gone, internet infrastructure is burnt. What would you save? This is a speculative session where participants will be asked to bring their best internet memories to create a collaborative fictional artwork, a legacy of the good old times when the web was open, accessible, and fun. My current art research articulates the dark social and environmental consequences of the current networked model, under which I've created the publication 'Devastação' (https://pretti-et.al/devastacao).

Pump Up the Volume: The Importance of Listening to Stakeholders in Copyright Reform and Regulation
Modern attempts to control the flow of information and culture are being influenced not by creators of information and culture but by corporate lobbyists who want to own it. US lobbyists have influenced the development of copyright in South Africa and Canada this year. Creators and especially Indigenous peoples should be consulted on ways to foster and protect their cultural production. Education should be a two-way street: Creators need to understand their rights and alternatives, but those creating those rights and alternatives must also be educated by the creators.

You’re Allowed to Remix it, but can You? Exploring Portability: The Measure of how far OER can Travel
“Remixing,” as one of the “5R’s,” is one of the key advantages of Open Educational Resources (OER). But can most of the OER being produced today actually be remixed?

In this session, open advocates Learning Equality will lead an investigation into portability: the quality that determines whether digital content is able to reach as many audiences around the world as possible.

We’ll invite participants to evaluate their own or others’ resources with regards to a portability checklist, create indicators collaboratively, and explore ramifications for evaluators, creators, and technologists.

You can hear his weekly radio show "Da Raiz Ao Ritmo" on Lisbon's finest radio station Rádio Oxigénio
