Modern attempts to control the flow of information and culture are being influenced not by creators of information and culture but by corporate lobbyists who want to own it. US lobbyists have influenced the development of copyright in South Africa and Canada this year. Creators and especially Indigenous peoples should be consulted on ways to foster and protect their cultural production. Education should be a two-way street: Creators need to understand their rights and alternatives, but those creating those rights and alternatives must also be educated by the creators.
